Whitworth University is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Spokane, which is a city in Northwestern USA, in Washington state, being the largest city of Spokane County (also serving as its county seat), during the 2008 census estimate, its population being approximated at a number of more than 202 300 inhabitants, which also makes it the 2nd largest city in the state.
The university was established in 1890 and was founded by George Whitworth, as the Sumner Academy in Sumner, a small town in Washington Territory, later being moved to its present location.
Whitworth presently offers its students a vast array of educational opportunities, including undegraduate and graduate majors, as well as pre-dentistry, pre-law, pre-medicine, pre-med tech, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, and pre-veterinary programs, its mission being `to provide its diverse student body an education of the mind and heart, equipping its graduates to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity.`
Whitworth's athletic teams call themselves the Pirates and they compete in the Northwest Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Their distinctive colors are crimson and black.
Among the noteworthy Whitworth alumni, there are also: Stephen C. Meyer - executive officer and co-founder of the Discovery Institute, a Seattle, WA based think tank that advocates the promotion of Intelligent Design in biological science, and one-time philosophy professor at Whitworth, and Richard Cizik - vice president for governmental affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals, was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2008.
